Postman’s Park is a little known green space close to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Technically it is the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice, which commemorates otherwise ordinary individuals who lost their lives while attempting to save the life of another person.

The Memorial was established by the Victorian artist George Frederic Watts and consists of 54 ceramic tablets recording the sacrifice made by Victorian and Edwardian Londoners, including two from Richmond.

The talk will provide a brief history of the Memorial before examining the local incidents in more detail.

Our speaker is Dr John Price, who is a Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at Goldsmiths, University of London. His primary area of research is everyday heroism and he has published extensively on the Memorial including writing its history.
