boughton-houseWe have a real treat with this summer’s coach trip as we have managed to obtain a slot – on Monday 27 June – for a group visit to the “The English Versailles” – Boughton House in Northamptonshire. This remarkable home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry is richly decorated with fine collections of furniture, tapestries, art (El Greco, Van Dyck, Gainsborough etc), and porcelain. Begun as a Tudor manor, it was rebuilt on a grand scale by the 1st Duke of Montagu to create an elegant mansion set in 150 acres of landscaped parkland. In these grounds we can explore a walled garden, a recently restored Grand Etang, lakes, waterways and formal lawns.

One of the many paintings at Boughton House is this painting, by an unknown artist, of James, Duke of Monmouth

We will have a guided tour of the House in the afternoon (approx 1 hour) and will see many of the major rooms and a substantial part of the Buccleuch Art Collection. Please note that as Boughton is a private home and not normally open to the public, we have to pre-book catering as it is especially brought in by the catering firm.
