For 650 years, the House of Warwick shaped the political and cultural destiny of England. Their remarkable power saw them rise from Midland warlords to (briefly) usurping the English Crown. In this talk Aaron Manning will particularly look at Queen Elizabeth’s favourite Robert Dudley and his time at Richmond Palace.
The House of Dudley were the most infamous and scandalous of all English noble families of the sixteenth century, dominating the politics and life of the Tudor court. Yet their quest for power was never secure. This talk explores how they yearned to legitimise their power with a lordship in the Midlands, but relied on their influence and presence in Richmond and Surrey to survive.
Aaron Manning is a historian and author, and Interpretation Manager at Hampton Court Palace. He has recently published his first book, England’s Bears: the Blood and Glory of the House of Warwick.
