It took place on Wednesday 12 May. This was actually the date fixed for the coronation of Edward VIII, King George\u2019s elder brother, who had abdicated the previous <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid267\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">December. It was judged that the arrangements were too far advanced for the date to be <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid268\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">changed.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid269\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page30R_mcid269\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The towns in the area were highly decorated in <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid270\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">honour of the new king. The Richmond Electricity <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid271\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Company were selling &#8220;handsome coloured shields for <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid272\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">outside decoration. Shields can be brilliantly lighted <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid273\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">by one 40-watt lamp and the cost of current for 24 <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid274\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">hours (say from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily during the <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid275\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Celebrations) will be about one penny.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page30R_mcid275\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Visitors to Kew <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid276\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Green found that it was: &#8220;encircled with red, white and <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid277\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">blue bunting and streamers, and nearly every house <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid278\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sports a Union Jack and coat-of-arms. Many of the <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid279\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">houses present most colourful spectacles, especially <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid280\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">after dark, when artistically-arranged fairy lights give <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid281\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the village almost a Venetian aspect.&#8221; In Richmond, <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid282\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Hill<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Rise<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8220;was<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mass<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">flags<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">bunting<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid283\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">coloured lights. The Richmond Cinema was adorned <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid284\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with fairy lights. The Town Hall bore an elaborate <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid285\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">shield and decorative scroll with the letters &#8216;G.R.&#8217; The <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid286\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Union colours were also prominent.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid287\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page30R_mcid287\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.richmondhistory.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/IMG_1026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.richmondhistory.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/IMG_1026-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">festivities<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lasted<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">week,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">finishing<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">splendid<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">torchlight<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">procession<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Richmond <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid288\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Park to the Old Deer Park. A thousand torches were carried through the town centre. A <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid289\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">journalist<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">wrote<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">how<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span> &#8220;<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">thousand<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">quivering<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">flames<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">lit<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">up<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dark<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">shadows<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">trees<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid290\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the background. The whole road was a mass of light, creating a marvellous spectacle.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid291\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page30R_mcid291\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Many residents had been setting aside small <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid292\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">amounts each week towards celebrating the coronation with a street party. In Albert Road, Richmond &#8220;[t]he substantial sum of <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid293\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a325 was collected and donated for a coronation tea. The children each received a gift. The girls <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid294\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">were given a pinafore, and the boys a tie. They all received a coronation mug, a bag of fruit, <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page30R_mcid295\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">sweets and biscuits, and lemonade. The <em>Richmond Herald<\/em> reported that that the children had been given a &#8220;wonderful &#8216;spread&#8217;, including pastries, jellies, sandwiches, fruit and cream, and ice-cream. In the evening there were very high spirits as the grown-ups had beer and sandwiches, and danced in the street.
